The Detroit Lions will look to move one step closer to home-field advantage in the postseason when they face the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. The Lions will come into the matchup as one of the Super Bowl odds favorites.

When looking at the Lions vs. 49ers early picks and odds, it’s key to take motivations into consideration. The Lions are in a weird position. If the Minnesota Vikings win on Sunday, then the result of Monday’s 8:15 p.m. ET (ESPN/ABC/ESPN+) game will hold no impact on their postseason standing.

Of course, the Lions will still want revenge against the 49ers after blowing a double-digit lead during the NFC Championship Game last season. But can the 49ers pull off the upset as 3.5-point underdogs?

The Lions are better than the 49ers in every facet right now. The 49ers have scored 17 or fewer points in five of their last six games, and the team's defense has allowed at least 29 in three of five.

The Lions continue to lead the NFL in scoring after putting up 34 points against the Chicago Bears last week. They’ve now scored more than 30 points in three consecutive games. Their depleted defense looked fine last week, allowing 17 points and forcing two turnovers.

The only way the Lions slip up against a team that was just eliminated from playoff contention is if they have nothing to play for on Monday. If the Vikings win on Sunday, that would ensure the Lions won’t be able to lock up the NFC North and the No. 1 seed until Week 18.

However, this is a game Detroit circled some time ago due to the revenge factor, so take the better team as the small favorite.

Moneyline

  • Lions best odds: - | Implied probability: 64.28%
  • 49ers best odds: +162 via FanDuel | Implied probability: 38.17%

There isn’t much disparity between our best NFL prop betting sites on the moneyline, with the prices for the Lions ranging from -180 to -194, and the odds for the 49ers going from +150 to +162.

The Lions are getting the majority of the support right now, so it’s likely their moneyline odds will get to -200 before Sunday. Therefore, you can wait if you're backing the 49ers.

But don’t wait too long, as a Vikings win would greatly impact the 49ers' odds and likely make them less favorable.

Spread

  • Lions best odds: -3.5 (-105) via FanDuel
  • 49ers best odds: +3.5 (-110) via

Early betting heavily supports the Lions, as 82% of wagers are on them to cover this spread at the best NFL parlay betting sites. However, that support hasn't been leading to any line movement.

I expect this number to swell to 4 or 4.5 points eventually. However, this is a spread that must be monitored all day on Sunday. If the Vikings win, don’t be surprised to see this spread drop below three. If the Vikings lose, this number may grow to 5 or more.

Over/Under

  • Over best odds: 51.5 (-105) via FanDuel
  • Under best odds: 51.5 (-110) via BetMGM

The 49ers’ defense has been playing poorly in recent weeks, so it’s not surprising to see the public backing the Over in a convincing fashion.

Currently, 64% of bettors are taking the Over on 51.5, and that number probably won’t decrease much throughout the week. The Lions are averaging 32.9 points per game, and while the 49ers have scored fewer than 20 points in five of six games, they’re still averaging 22.1 per outing.

The number will keep rising as the public supports the Lions’ offense and fades their struggling defense.
