First Touchdown Scorer Predictions for Monday Night Football Week 6

For the first time in 56 games, Robert Saleh will not be on the sidelines for the Jets. New York fans are hoping for a spark after his departure but may have a tough hill to climb against an angry Bills team with problems that needs to get the season back on track. The Monday Night Football odds list this as a tight game, but our Mike Spector leans toward the visitors in his Bills vs. Jets prediction.

After starting 3-0, the Bills have dropped their last two contests, including an embarrassing 35-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football. Buffalo’s lead running back, James Cook, missed practice all week with a toe injury but was limited in practice on Saturday and is expected to play.

We examine if he'll strike first, or if someone else will emerge as the first touchdown scorer for Monday Night Football.

Bills first touchdown scorer prediction: James Cook, RB ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Cook has been the first Bills player to cross the goal line in three of Buffalo’s five games this season. In two of them, he was the first player in the game to score a touchdown.

The Bills have tallied their first touchdown on the ground in four games this year. They have accounted for the first six-point play of the game in three of those.

Buffalo has run the ball on 49.82% of its offensive snaps, the seventh-highest rushing percentage in the league. This season, the Bills have had 48 plays inside the red zone and have run the ball 30 times. As discussed in our Bills vs. Jets player props, quarterback Josh Allen is having a down season, which has resulted in an even heavier lean toward the run game.

Cook has seen 15 touches inside the 20-yard line so far this year and all four of his touchdowns have been in the red zone.

The Bills’ lead back was limited in practice on Saturday as he continues to recover from a toe injury he suffered in Houston. Even still, he plans to play so I expect him to see his normal workload early in this game.

Jets first touchdown scorer prediction: Allen Lazard, WR ⭐⭐⭐

The Jets have scored the fourth-fewest points (93) in the league this season. Allen Lazard accounts for 25% of those points with his team-high four touchdown receptions. 

His former Green Bay quarterback and current signal caller Aaron Rodgers has connected with him for their team’s first touchdown in two of their last three games. 

Lazard is second on the team in targets (33) and yards (240). He has been targeted on eight of New York’s 25 red zone pass attempts while scoring on three of his four receptions inside the 20-yard line. I like him as the game's first TD scorer, and our  Esten McLaren likes him as his Anytime Touchdown Scorer for MNF.

Buffalo has allowed their opponent to find their first touchdown by way of the passing game in three of their five games this season.

The Jets throw the ball 64.2% of the time and three of first touchdowns have come off of Rodgers’ arm.
