After their first in-season tournament defeat, the Los Angeles Lakers still hold an outside shot of winning their NBA Cup group when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder at 10 p.m. ET on Friday inside the Crypto.com Arena.

The Thunder enter sitting second in the NBA championship odds, with the Lakers now long shots in the NBA Cup odds.

The Lakers need to defeat the Thunder as 1.5-point underdogs on Friday and hope that the San Antonio Spurs beat the Phoenix Suns in the final group matchup on Tuesday. Los Angeles is unlikely to advance past group play if it comes down to a point differential tiebreaker.

Despite being the team’s starting point guard, Austin Reaves has recorded two assists in each of his past two games. He’s averaging five potential assists per contest over the last two outings.

That trend is unlikely to end against the league's top-ranked defense. The Thunder boast enough length across the board to bother Reaves, which is why I project him to finish below 4.5 assists on Friday.

Jalen Williams injured his eye in Wednesday’s win against the Golden State Warriors, but he’s off the injury report ahead of Friday’s matchup in Los Angeles. Williams recorded seven assists over just 16 minutes against the Warriors.

Williams has been highly utilized over the last five games. He leads the team in passes made (54.2) while ranking second in assists (six) and potential assists (8.4) over that span.

It looks like JJ Redick is becoming the latest Lakers head coach to try (and surely fail) to unlock Anthony Davis’ 3-point shot. Davis has hit one 3-pointer over the past five games while attempting eight shots from long range.

Our best sportsbooks still price Davis’ 3-point line as more of a coin flip, but it’s only a matter of time before this edge disappears. Davis has scored below 20 points in two of his past three outings, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him struggle against Oklahoma City’s No. 1 defense.
