The San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks each made significant roster moves in the offseason, and the division rivals will clash at American Airlines Arena on Thursday in their respective season openers.

  • Our Spurs vs. Mavericks player prop bets lean on combo props for Thursday’s divisional matchup
  • Devin Vassell’s absence frees up plenty of scoring opportunities for Spurs newcomer Harrison Barnes
  • Kyrie Irving is in a favorable position to stuff the stat sheet, but teammate P.J. Washington could have a tougher time coming by his own numbers

Irving enjoyed another productive season last year, averaging 25.6 points, five rebounds, and 5.2 assists in 2023-24. That was good for 35.8 PRAs per contest, and he hit the Over on this prop in 49 of 58 appearances or 84.4% of his games.

For as good as he was on the season as a whole, Irving was even better against San Antonio. He averaged 39.3 PRAs in three games against the Spurs and hit the Over twice. He posted 30 PRAs in the lone contest in which he went Under.

San Antonio’s defense presents a favorable matchup for Irving, and based on last season’s success (particularly against the Spurs), we can confidently take the Over here.

Harrison Barnes Over 11.5 points ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Barnes averaged just 12.2 points per game for the Sacramento Kings last season, which was his worst mark since the 2015-16 campaign. He scored at least 12 points in exactly half of his 82 games played.

Barnes’ dip in scoring came while playing alongside strong scorers like De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and Malik Monk. He won’t face that type of competition on this rebuilding roster, and Barnes should see an uptick in offensive usage with the Spurs.

Devin Vassell averaged 19.5 points per game last season as the Spurs’ second scoring option, but he’ll miss this game with a foot injury. Barnes could operate in that secondary role behind Victor Wembanyama, making this an easy Over pick.

To sweeten the deal, Barnes has scored at least 20 points in three of his last four season openers. He averaged 14.6 points in four matchups with Dallas last season and hit the Over three times. This is the easiest pick of the night.

P.J. Washington Under 19.5 points + rebounds + assists ⭐⭐⭐

Washington finished the 2023-24 season with averages of 12.9 points, 5.6 boards, and 1.9 assists while playing for the Charlotte Hornets and Mavericks. He posted 21.1 PRAs per game with Charlotte and 19.4 with Dallas in the regular season.

Washington hit the Over on this line in 12 of 29 regular-season games and 12 of 22 playoff games. In total, he posted at least 20 PRAs in just 47% of his games after joining the Mavericks.

Luka Doncic and Irving will command most of the usage for this team. Washington will face renewed competition for playing time and touches with the arrival of Klay Thompson, and Dallas’ frontcourt includes two starting-caliber centers.

Washington averaged 17 PRAs in three games against the Spurs last season and hit the Over in one of them. As a fourth or fifth offensive option on this team and operating as a player who doesn’t live in the paint, we can’t project Washington to cash the Over here.
