The New York Yankees flexed their muscles against the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS and look to compound their home-field advantage with a win in Game 2.

The Yankees send ace Gerrit Cole to the mound. The team won both of his starts in the ALDS against the Kansas City Royals, with the righty pitching to a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings.

Cole is 4-2 in seven career postseason starts since joining the Yankees, and he faces a Guardians lineup that had a 93 wRC+ in the second half of the season, the lowest of any playoff team.

New York also had a big edge in bullpen rest entering this series. In the ALDS, Yankees relievers pitched 15 ⅔ scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts. Meanwhile, Guardians relievers threw 25 ⅔ innings, though they were dominant with a .191 OBA and 37 strikeouts.

That rest advantage was exacerbated in Game 1, as Cleveland used four relievers to patch up the last 5 ⅓ innings, while New York used three relievers for the final three innings, and only one threw more than 14 pitches.

Prediction: Steven Kwan 2+ hits ⭐⭐

Kwan has awful career numbers against Cole, going 2-for-13 with two strikeouts and a .368 OPS. However, this is a two-star play because of what Kwan has done in the postseason.

Kwan set a Guardians franchise record for hits in a division series (11). He also entered Game 1 with a .392 postseason batting average, the highest by far in franchise history among players with a minimum of 50 at-bats (the next-closest players are Carlos Baerga and Marquis Grissom at .292). 

Kwan has at least one hit in all six playoff games thus far, and just had a streak of three straight three-hit days snapped with his 1-for-4 performance yesterday. 

The odds for him to record at least one hit are too steep, with the Over of 0.5 juiced as high as -230 at Caesars. Thus, I am swinging for the fences with this play at DraftKings, and their +265 odds trump the +230 odds found at FanDuel for the same wager.

With DraftKings’ +265 odds, a $10 winning wager would net $26.50 in profits.
