2024 British Open Power Rankings: Favorites to Back for Your Open Championship Pools & Picks
Last Updated: July 17, 2024 9:21 AM EDT • 5 min 29 sec read.
Royal Troon welcomes a field of 158 for this year's with Scottie Scheffler comfortably perched atop the outright oddsboard. However, I'm looking elsewhere for the top pick in my British Open power rankings as we try to choose among the top tournament favorites.
Scheffler's British Open odds are as low as +450 across our best golf betting sites, representing an 18.18% implied win probability. He's not among my British Open expert picks with a $10 returning a modest profit of $45.
But who am I to stop you from betting the PGA Tour's only six-time winner this year?
Still, our British Open power rankings aim to help differentiate the top-tier favorites. We'll consider key stats, current form, course history, and the betting odds in search of the golfer who'll raise the Claret Jug at Royal Troon on Sunday.
I had Bryson DeChambeau ranked No. 2 ahead of his U.S. Open victory last month.

10. Sahith Theegala
Theegala tied for fourth in last week's Genesis Scottish Open, thanks largely to 1.23 strokes gained on the greens per round. That's not entirely an outlier number for the California native, as he excels on and around the greens.
A strong short game is essential for any Open Championship success. His outright odds are as short as +4500, so be sure to bet him via Caesars for an extra $150 in profit on a winning $10 ticket.
Best odds: +6000 via Caesars | Implied probability: 1.64%

9. Tom Kim
Kim surged up the Scottish Open leaderboard with a Sunday round of minus-6 to finish T-15. He was excellent from tee to green all week, and finally seemed to find his putting stroke in Round 4. The 22-year-old has been a consistent top finisher in the Scottish Open and the British Open over the past two years.
Best odds: +4500 via Caesars | Implied probability: 2.17%
8. Viktor Hovland
Hovland tied for 46th last week despite an exceptionally strong week on the greens. His approach play was abnormally poor and his short game isn't good enough to compensate when his irons and wedges aren't getting close.
Still, I like that he arrived to play in Scotland a week early. He'll look for a fourth straight top-15 finish in The Open.
Best odds: +3300 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 2.94%

7. Bryson DeChambeau
DeChambeau's a month removed from his second U.S. Open victory, but the British Open is an entirely different game. The long-hitting American tied for eighth in 2022, but he finished outside the top 30 in each of his other five appearances, including a T-60 last year.
Best odds: +1700 via bet365 | Implied probability: 5.56%
6. Tyrrell Hatton
Hatton is the hottest golfer on the LIV Series right now with a win in Nashville and a third-place finish last week in Spain. The Englishman has been mostly underwhelming in majors over his career, but he first broke onto the scene with a T-5 finish in the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon.
Best odds: +2800 via bet365 | Implied probability: 3.45%
5. Xander Schauffele
Schauffele finished inside the top eight in each of the first three majors this year, but The Open has been his worst of the four major championships over his career. A T-2 result in 2018 was his only finish better than T-15 in six appearances.
I'm ranking him here out of respect for his PGA Championship win, but I wouldn't bet him for anything better than a top-10 result, and would prefer to stick to the top-20 market.
Best odds: +1500 via bet365 | Implied probability: 6.25%
4. Ludvig Aberg
The only critique for Aberg entering the year's fourth major is his Sunday collapse in the Scottish Open. The Swedish star entered the final round with a two-stroke lead but finished four strokes back of Robert MacIntyre after he shot 3-over on a day when everyone was going low.
If he can use that energy positively this week and learn to press a little harder with a Sunday lead, he's as live as any bet on the board.
Best odds: +1600 via Caesars | Implied probability: 5.88%
3. Scottie Scheffler
We're paying American prices for Scheffler to win the British Open. Ignoring his six PGA Tour wins this year, there's no chance he'd have odds as short as this to win in Scotland. Scheffler finished outside of the top 20 each of the past two years following a T-8 in his Open Championship debut in 2021.
It would've been nice to see the FedEx Cup odds favorite play in Scotland last week. While his absence from that event has helped boost his odds slightly, I still won't be paying the premium.
Best odds: +550 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 15.38%
2. Rory McIlroy
Well, here we go.
Following a heartbreaking loss in the U.S. Open, McIlroy took nearly a month away from competitive golf to then finish T-4 in his attempted defense of the Scottish Open. Putting and approach play remained weaknesses last week, though no one was better from tee to green or around the greens.
He also tied for fifth at Royal Troon in 2016 to make the bait that much more tempting.
Best odds: +800 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 11.11%
1. Collin Morikawa
The 2021 Champion Golfer of the Year missed the cut in each of the last two editions of the Open Championship, but he's been excellent in majors this year with nothing worse than his T-14 finish in the U.S. Open.
Only four qualified golfers rank ahead of Morikawa in SG: tee-to-green since June 1, and only five have been better with their putter.
Best odds: +1700 via bet365 | Implied probability: 5.56%
