There's a reason Purdue has been nicknamed the "Spoilermakers," but can they really knock off Oregon on Friday night? I certainly don't think so.

  • Our Oregon vs. Purdue prediction expects the Ducks to continue their stellar play and shorten their college football championship odds
  • While an unranked Boilermakers team has taken down two No. 2 teams since 2018, it's hard to think it will happen again with Dillon Gabriel being a Heisman Trophy odds favorite
  • The Ducks are already -2000 by the College Football Playoff odds, and another Big Ten win should keep them atop the oddsboard

In the first game of our Week 8 college football predictions featuring an  team, we think the Ducks will fly to an easy win.

Oregon vs. Purdue odds movement

Oregon opened as a 28-point favorite at our college football betting sites. The line has since moved further in the Ducks' direction with most sportsbooks settling in with Oregon -29.5.

However, 52% of the money is on Purdue covering, with 48% on the Ducks. The Over has 61% of the money, with the total hovering around 61.

While Purdue has a rich history of pulling off upsets, Jeff Brohm is no longer the shot-caller in West Lafayette. The Boilermakers are 5-13 under head coach Ryan Walters, including just 1-5 this season - that one win came over an FCS program.

Even with Purdue coming off an improbable comeback and near upset of Illinois, Oregon is a whole other animal. The Ducks are No. 7 in and fourth on offense - Purdue is just No. 82 and 93rd on defense.

With Gabriel, Jordan James, Tez Johnson, and Evan Stewart, Oregon should have no issues scoring at a high clip. The Ducks are third in and 26th in EPA per dropback while Purdue's defense ranks outside of the top 100 in both. 

Purdue fans will want a boilermaker

Clearly Purdue's offense is in better shape with Ryan Browne at QB and Walters calling plays, but this Oregon defense just took care of business against Ohio State without star Jordan Burch.

The Ducks are in the top 15 in both EPA per rush and dropback on defense, while Purdue's offense ranks outside the top 120. The Boilermakers have averaged 7.6 points per game against teams that are top 40 in SP+.

Purdue has covered the spread just once in its last five games, if they fail to again, a $10 bet pays a $9.52 profit.

Jordan James Over 109.5 rushing yards (-114) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Ducks have so much talent that James has become one of college football's most underrated running backs. He's 14th in the country in rushing yards (667) and has gone Over 109.5 in back-to-back games.

That includes 115 against a Buckeyes defense that's No. 2 in EPA per rush on defense - Purdue is No. 131. The Boilermakers are allowing the second-most rushing yards per game in the Power 4 (228.8) and have missed 75 tackles in six games, per .

Tackling James may be an impossible task for Purdue, too, he's 16th in the nation in yards after contact (409) and 17th in missed tackles forced (32). If he can hit 110-plus rushing yards, a $10 bet pays an $8.77 profit.
