We already have a handful of stars opting out of their team's postseason plans, including Tulane QB Darian Mensah, Duke QB Maalik Murphy, and Liberty QB Kaidon Salter. Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson and Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden are among the biggest non-QB names to opt-out.

There's a chance no Power 4 team will be in worse shape this bowl season than West Virginia. With head coach Neal Brown fired, a flurry of players has hit the transfer portal, including Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year LB Josiah Trotter. With so much change, this line has already shifted in Memphis' direction. On the bright side, Rich Rodriguez is back in Morgantown with hopes of returning the program to its 2007 glory.

Without Barnett, the Dukes will start Dylan Morris, who only threw one pass this season but started at Washington in 2021. Given JMU's defensive play, the Under looks that much more appealing.

With backup QB Ty Thompson and third-string QB Kai Horton also in the portal, the QB situation for the Green Wave looked shaky against Florida, but Thompson has said he plans to play. Even if WR Tre Harris hadn't opted out to turn pro, it's unlikely he would have played due to injury. Leading rusher Henry Parrish could be missing as well, he hasn't played since Nov. 2. While QB Jaxson Dart and CB Trey Amos have said they'll play, I expect a few opt-outs for the Rebels. How many college football bowl games are there this year?

There are 47 bowl games in the 2024-25 college football bowl game season, including 11 matchups in the College Football Playoff.

When is college football bowl season?

The first college football bowl game is the Cricket Celebration Bowl, which kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 14 at noon ET. The final bowl game will be the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

When does the College Football Playoff start?

The 2025 College Football Playoff starts with the first round on Dec. 20 and 21, with games being played at the campus of the higher seed. The quarterfinals will then be played across the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

The semifinals take place Jan. 9 at the Orange Bowl and Jan. 10 at the Cotton Bowl before the CFP national championship on Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

How many teams make the College Football Playoff?

Previously only four teams were selected for the College Football Playoff, but this season the playoff expands to 12 teams. The top five ranked conference champions will be automatic qualifiers for the playoff along with seven at-large teams chosen by the College Football Playoff selection committee. The top four conference champions will receive a first-round bye.
