While both the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns are virtual locks in the College Football Playoff odds, a coveted first-round bye is on the line Saturday at 4 p.m. ET (ABC) in the SEC Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

  • Georgia beat Georgia Tech last week in eight overtimes - the second-longest game in FBS history
  • Texas has made its conference championship in back-to-back years after winning the 2023 Big 12 Championship
  • The Bulldogs beat the Longhorns in Austin, 30-15, in Week 8

Our Georgia vs. Texas predictions and odds back the Longhorns at any odds less than a field goal, despite the home-field advantage the Bulldogs figure to have.

We're looking at this game so much more as part of our college football conference championship predictions, and I've done a late-week update in my Georgia vs. Texas prediction.

My early Georgia vs. Texas prediction: Texas -2.5

Texas is coming off a dominant road win in one of the toughest environments in college football against Texas A&M, which scored its fewest points in a game since 2019 and didn't score an offensive touchdown for the first time since 2021.

As a result, the Longhorns finished as the only SEC team with a 7-1 or better record in league play and outscored their opponents 228-118 in league action.

I would play Texas at anything less than a field goal, as Georgia is dealing with injuries to several starters and now has the distraction of one of its cornerbacks entering the transfer portal.

Moneyline

  • Texas best odds: -135 via DraftKings | Implied probability: 57.45%
  • Georgia best odds: +125 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 44.44%

There is a big 15-cent gap between the -135 moneyline odds for Texas at DraftKings and the -150 odds at bet365.

Georgia is likely to get the majority of moneyline wagers given that it should have a big home-field advantage with the game being in Atlanta - and the fact that it already beat Texas earlier this year.

The Bulldogs have also been in the SEC Championship in six of the last seven years, which should attract the attention of public bettors. They've lost four of the last five.

Spread

  • Texas best odds: -2.5 (-115) via DraftKings
  • Georgia best odds: +3 (-115) via bet365

This half-point difference among our best sportsbooks is as significant as it gets, since bet365 and Caesars both have their lines set on the key number of three.

The first line movement in this matchup will be telling as to where the sharp money lands given how close the spread is to a key number. By kickoff, I expect more sportsbooks to be at -3 than -2.5 or lower.

Over/Under

  • Over best odds: 48.5 (-110) via BetMGM
  • Under best odds: 49.5 (-110) via FanDuel

There is a one-point difference among the best sports betting apps with regards to the opening total. Texas is one of the SEC's best Under teams this year with a 7-3-2 record, while the Under has cashed in Georgia’s last two games as an underdog.

This sets up to be a “pros vs. joes” split on the total, as the public will likely bet the Under given that these two teams combined for 45 points in their first matchup. Meanwhile, sharps will factor in how gassed the Bulldogs defense will be after last week’s marathon.
