Coastal Carolina and UTSA each look to end their seasons on a high note when they meet in the Myrtle Beach Bowl on Monday at 11 a.m. ET (ESPN) at Brooks Stadium.

  • Coastal Carolina stumbled down the stretch, going 2-5 after starting 4-1
  • UTSA went 3-1 in November to earn bowl eligibility
  • The two quarterbacks that the Chanticleers used this season each entered the transfer portal

Our Coastal Carolina vs. UTSA prediction for the Myrtle Beach Bowl expects the Roadrunners to dominate as the hotter and more cohesive team entering this bowl matchup.

Motivation is everything

UTSA started slow with a 2-4 record this year, which had its bowl eligibility hopes looking slim. However, not only did the Roadrunners win three of their final four games and four of their last six, but they started to blossom offensively in the process.

UTSA scored 38 or more points five times in its final six games, and the only time it failed to reach that mark was against a top-seven scoring defense in Army.

That performance against the Black Knights should not be viewed as a negative. The Roadrunners scored 24 points against the eventual AAC champions, despite possessing the ball for a little over only 19 minutes.

UTSA clearly has all the momentum on its side, playing better down the stretch while the Chanticleers faltered, and has more of its team intact after analyzing the transfer portal news and opt-outs.

Unknown at quarterback for Coastal Carolina

No quarterback on Coastal Carolina’s roster outside of Ethan Vasko and Noah Kim attempted a pass this year, and both entered the transfer portal ahead of this bowl matchup.

Four days after the transfer portal opened, Coastal Carolina had 25 of its players enter, which was tied for the fifth-most among Group of Five schools at the time.

The transfer portal activity prompted Chanticleers head coach Tim Beck to say, “You’re not building a program anymore. This isn’t a program. Each year you just build a team.”

UTSA can key in on the running game

With the lack of a proven quarterback to pose as a threat in the passing game, UTSA can use its top-five defensive rush efficiency ranking to shut down Coastal Carolina’s rushing attack.

In addition, UTSA’s pass rush ranks 12th, so I expect the Roadrunners to dial up the pressure, especially if red-shirt freshman Tad Hudson is under center for Coastal Carolina for his first career snaps.

BetMGM and FanDuel are a half-point higher off the key number at -10.5. Our preferred option of our best sports betting sites as UTSA backers is Caesars, the only one offering a spread of -10 at better than the standard -110 juice.

UTSA quarterback Owen McCown has bowl experience and was outstanding for UTSA in last year’s 35-17 Frisco Bowl win over Marshall.

McCown entered that game with just 27 pass attempts in the regular season but calmly completed 22-of-31 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns in the bowl win.

That performance helped springboard a successful season this year. Over the last six games, McCown has thrown for 310 yards per game and averaged a 2-1 TD-INT ratio.

McCown is a dual-threat player, with over 50 rushing yards per game over the last six games. He also spreads the ball around, as five different players caught 13 to 24 passes from him in that last six-game stretch.

I have full faith in McCown and the UTSA offense to score 35-plus points for the sixth time in the last seven games.
