Former Ohio State star Marcus Freeman leads Notre Dame against his alma mater on Monday, Jan. 20, as the Fighting Irish meet the Buckeyes in the CFP National Championship at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Given Ohio State's dominance in the College Football Playoff, it was unsurprising to see the Buckeyes open as the clear favorites to win the national championship.
However, being favored by 9.5 points against a Notre Dame squad that's won 13 straight games - including beating Indiana and Georgia by double digits in the CFP - was a bit of a shock.
Clearly, bettors were surprised by it, too, with the line quickly shifting down 1.5 points after the public began to back the Fighting Irish. A whopping 68% of bettors are taking the Irish to cover, according to the Ohio State vs. Notre Dame betting consensus.
That makes sense, given Notre Dame is 12-2-1 ATS this season, tied for the highest cover percentage in the country (85.7%). The team has managed to cover in 10 straight games, including winning outright as a 1-point underdog against Penn State in the CFP semifinal.

As Covers' pointed out, Notre Dame has been an underdog only seven times with Freeman leading the charge and has managed to go 6-1 ATS and 4-3 straight-up.
But just once during Freeman's tenure have the Irish been a two-score underdog. That was also against Ohio State when the two teams played in 2022. The Buckeyes won 21-10 in that season opener, with Notre Dame covering as a 15-point underdog.
While the Buckeyes are a respectable 9-6 ATS this season - which includes covering in all three CFP games - they're currently being offered at -8 or -8.5. That makes them a bigger favorite against Notre Dame in the championship than they were against Tennessee (-7.5), Oregon (-2.5), and Texas (-6).
The line at our best sports betting sites could continue to experience movement if the public continues to back Notre Dame so strongly. Covering as an 8-point favorite in the biggest game of the season is a huge ask, even if Ohio State has looked like an entirely different team in the postseason.
I think a more realistic spread for this game would be Ohio State -6.5, but I'm not so sure this line will move that far by kickoff on Jan. 20. And while I do think Ohio State comes out on top, I'd be backing Notre Dame +8.5 right now, especially with projection of a 26-20 Buckeyes win.
