Filling out the market
Sports betting has been legal in Arizona since April 2021. When it became law, provisions were made for a total of 20 event wagering licenses. There were 10 licenses available for Arizona tribes willing to partner with an Arizona sports betting site, and another 10 made available for Arizona's sports franchises.
As of February, only 18 of those licenses were active in the Grand Canyon State, prompting the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADOG) to open an application process for two licenses: one that would have to be tethered to a tribal casino and one that would be partnered with one of the state's sports teams.
The Fanatics Sportsbook license satisfied the tribal sports betting license. Apparently, none of the state's sports teams applied for an event wagering license, leaving at least one valuable license up for grabs.
