What to Look for This NBA Season

Opening night kicked off Tuesday October 18, with the Philadelphia 76ers tipping off against the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers taking on their in-state rival Golden State Warriors.

Last year, the Sixers made a deep run into the playoffs before bowing out to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference semifinals. They ended the 2021-22 season with a 51-31 overall record, a mark they shared with both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics. The Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals last season, ultimately losing to the Warriors in six games.

Last season these teams faced each other four times, with both teams earning two wins apiece.

Golden State opens the season as the reigning champions. The Warriors faced the Lakers four times last season and dominated the series, winning three of them. Los Angeles missed the playoffs last season with a 33-49 record, finishing a game behind the San Antonio Spurs for the final postseason spot.

NBA fans have plenty of other games to look forward to over the rest of the calendar year.

On Dec. 10th, fans get a finals rematch as the Warriors and Celtics meet for the first time since Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

As always, the NBA gives you a full slate of Christmas Day hoops starting with Philadelphia visiting Madison Square Garden. Next, the Lakers take on the Dallas Mavericks. Then, the Milwaukee Bucks meet the Celtics followed by the Memphis Grizzlies taking on the Warriors. The Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets play the nightcap.

A couple of greats are also nearing some impressive milestones, set to eclipse long-standing records belonging to the biggest names in the sport.

LeBron James is on a quest this season to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the league’s all-time scoring leader. Entering this year, he is just 1,326 points off the mark. Given his career 27 points per game average, he should be approaching that mark by the end of January (if healthy).

The legendary Michael Jordan is close to losing his position as third all-time in steals, with Chris Paul just 62 shy of passing him. In his 17 years in the league, Paul has never had fewer than 96 steals in a season. Look for him to move past the GOAT by mid-December.
