Best Vermont sports betting sites
Now that Gov. Scott has signed HB 127 into law, only a few unknowns remain concerning the future of legal sports betting in Vermont. We already know that online sportsbooks launched on Jan. 11, 2024, and that Fanatics, FanDuel, and DraftKings are the three options available on Day One.
We also know that BetMGM and ESPN BET have applied for betting licenses, but they were not ready to go on launch day. With Vermont legislation allowing up to six betting licenses, it remains to be seen who might try to claim the final slot. Our money is on Caesars Sportsbook, but it could be a surprise entrant like bet365 or someone else.
Though itโs impossible to know for certain which other betting sites will eventually get the nod, we can use recent state launches to help predict which options Green Mountain State bettors will eventually have. Hereโs what we foresee as the best sports betting sites landing in Vermont:

How to start betting in Vermont
Vermont legalizing sports wagering in 2023 made for a sound revenue strategy. With so many sports betting dollars crossing the border to Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York, VT lawmakers recognized the value of keeping that money in-house. It expedited the timeframe for a legal sports betting bill to reach Gov. Scottโs desk. Now, some of the countryโs top sportsbooks and apps have arrived in Vermont.
Below is a simple step-by-step guide on how to start betting now that online sportsbooks have officially launched in VT:
1. Select a licensed Vermont sportsbook
Choosing a betting site is a delicate process. You should never blindly sign-up at an online sportsbook or download just any sports betting app. Ensure you do your homework and scour each option for what best suits your needs. The top Vermont sportsbooks all offer quality promotions, best-in-class security, numerous banking methods, an intuitive user experience, and responsive customer service.
Download your preferred Vermont sports betting apps to your iOS or Android device for the best experience.
2. Register online
The next step is to create a new sportsbook account, which you can do via desktop or mobile app. Operators require you to provide basic personal information when registering, such as your full name, home address, email address, date of birth, and social security number. Your SSN helps to verify your identity and eliminate any potential bonus abuse.
Youโll then want to create a unique username and password. The strongest passwords mix upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Try to make your password at least eight characters long.
3. Deposit and claim a bonus
After completing the sign-up process, itโs time to visit the sportsbookโs cashier. Here, youโll sync your account with your preferred banking methods. Keep in mind that while most states with legal sports betting accept credit cards, HB 127 stipulates that they cannot be used to make deposits or bets in Vermont. So, youโre looking at debit cards, ACH bank wire transfers, PayPal, and other third-party wallets and banking services.
If your chosen sportsbookโs welcome bonus requires a promo code to unlock, itโs at this stage that youโll need to punch it in. Ensure you have the code handy throughout registration.
4. Select and finalize your bet
With funds in your account, you can safely begin sifting through the sportsbookโs available betting markets. Vermontโs best betting sites all offer odds on the four major North American sports leagues โ the NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB โ and the most popular bet types โ moneylines, point spreads, and point totals.
Once youโve garnered some experience and are looking for something a little riskier, youโll also find the best VT sportsbooks provide live in-game betting, same-game parlays, player props, and teasers.
5. Withdraw your winnings
After you string together a few wins, you might be eager to request a withdrawal. To do this, return to the online sportsbookโs cashier page and click the withdraw button. Youโll have a handful of options to transfer funds from your sportsbook wallet to your preferred bank account, including ACH wire transfers, PayPal, and physical checks. Just remember that even the best sportsbook for payouts typically takes up to five business days to deliver your money.
Vermont sports betting handle
Having just launched in January of 2024, Vermont is one of the newest sports betting markets in the United States. VT's sports betting handle peaked in February at $21.2 million, which makes sense considering the Super Bowl is the most wagered on event of the year in the U.S.
Sports betting handle refers to the amount of money wagered with sportsbooks during a specified period of time. March typically sees a bump in handle thanks to the NCAA Tournament, along with any month of the NFL season.
2024

January | $19.9 million |
February | $21.1 million |
March | $20.2 million |
April | $17.1 million |

Vermont sports betting neighbors
New Englandโs sports betting landscape is now complete, with Vermont being the last state in the region to legalize the practice. With healthy markets percolating in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York, Green Mountain State bettors no longer need to drive to neighboring states to make bets since Vermont online sports betting launched on Jan. 11, 2024.

What’s missing from Vermont sports betting?
Vermont sports betting may be officially live, but not every betting market was given the green light. While most sports leagues from around the world are covered, there are some extra betting options missing from the Vermont lineup.
Here's a quick look at what you can (and can't) bet on in Vermont.
Politics โ
As in every state where sports betting is legal, you will not be permitted to wager on political events in Vermont. For example, you wonโt be able to put money on who will win the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Horse racing โ
While no physical horse tracks are licensed to offer racing in Vermont, betting on the ponies online is legal. So, you can download horse racing betting apps like FanDuel TV to place your wagers.
Entertainment award ceremonies โ
House Bill 127 does not contain language concerning wagering on entertainment award ceremonies like the Oscars or Emmys. You may be able to wager on such markets in the future.
Esports โ
There is no mention of esports betting in HB 127. Some sportsbooks might test their luck and offer esports betting markets in Vermont since it's a bit of a legal grey area for now. We'll update this section if the rules get refined more clearly in the future.
What about daily fantasy sports? ๐
Daily fantasy sports are legal in Vermont โ and have been since 2017 โ via operators like DraftKings and FanDuel. You must be at least 21 years old to participate. Check out our full guide to the best DFS sites for more information.
Vermont college sports betting 🎓
Since Vermont isnโt home to any professional sports franchises, Green Mountain State bettors will likely be eager to wager on collegiate programs. While HB 127 dictates that betting on out-of-state college sports is permitted, it also notes that wagering on in-state college teams is not. The only exception to the rule is when VT-based teams are involved in big events, such as March Madness.
Vermont sports leagues and teams to bet on
Although Vermont doesnโt host any professional sports teams, Green Mountain State bettors still have plenty of franchises to root for in the region. The New England Patriots, Buffalo Sabres, New York Knicks, and New York Mets can all be considered hometown favorites, and while the pull to wager on those teams can be potent, itโs vital to wager with your head rather than your heart. Doing the latter can swiftly drain your bankroll.
If you aim to place a wager on your favorite team, ensure you first learn how to manage your bankroll and keep tabs on injury reports, depth chart changes, weather, and matchup information.
NFL ๐ | NBA ๐ | MLB โพ | NHL ๐ |
---|---|---|---|
New England Patriots | New York Knicks | Boston Red Sox | Boston Bruins |
Buffalo Bills | Boston Celtics | New York Yankees | Buffalo Sabres |
New York Giants | New York Mets | New York Rangers | |
New York Jets | New York Islanders |
Aside from the four major pro sports leagues, Vermont sports betting sites will also offer markets for European soccer, international tennis tournaments, PGA tour events, MMA fight cards, and major boxing matches.
Vermont sports betting taxes
Vermont sports betting includes a unique approach to taxes and fees for operators interested in entering the state. Rather than provide a flat tax rate for revenue, the new law implements a competitive bidding process. The maximum tax rate for operators is 20%, and those that earn a license need to pay a $550,000 fee, payable over a minimum of three years.
Individual bettors pay either a 6% tax โ for Vermont residents โ or a 7.25% tax โ for those who live out of state โ in addition to the 24% federal tax on gambling winnings. Remember, taxes are collected only on profits โ you can potentially write off your gambling losses to reduce your tax burden, so keep accurate and clean accounting records of your online sportsbook activity.
Vermont sports betting apps
Getting started with Vermont sports betting apps and best sportsbooks is a piece of cake. It's as simple as downloading an app to your smartphone or tablet, making an account, and depositing some money to wager with. In this section, I'll provide you with a step-by-step guide to get started:
How to download Vermont sports betting apps
Before you can bet on your mobile device in Vermont, you must download and install one of the abovementioned apps. All top-level sportsbooks in the U.S. have proprietary apps available for both iOS and Android devices, and their setup is simple.
iOS Vermont betting apps
We have you covered if you plan on betting via your Apple device, like an iPhone or iPad:
- Open the
- Search for the sportsbook of your choice with the
- Tap the
- You may need to
- The mobile betting app you choose will

Android Vermont betting apps
The process for installing a Vermont sports betting app on your Android device is almost exactly the same as on iOS:
- Open the
- Search
- Tap '
- Launch the app
- Ensure you have adequate
If you want to skip the App or Google Play Store completely, you can also find direct download links for the apps on the sportsbook's mobile websites. These will take you directly to the correct app, so you don't have to worry about downloading an imposter or unofficial app.
Importance of multiple apps and line shopping
Sticking to a single betting app is fine โ youโll probably want one that meets your criteria and not a bunch of others that just take up storage.
However, experienced bettors usually donโt follow that logic. Instead, visit as many different sportsbooks as they can. My goal is simple โ to look for the best possible odds. Sportsbooks donโt always post the exact same odds and lines. There will always be one sportsbook that offers the best value for your money. I don't know about you, but there's no way I'm going to bet with one particular sportsbook if I can get a better price somewhere else.
If youโre serious about consistently getting the highest potential profit, you should follow this strategy and go odds shopping whenever possible. After all, it only takes a few taps on your screen to switch from one app to another โ minimum effort, yet maximum results.
How to choose the best Vermont sports betting app
Even though youโre free to join multiple Vermont betting apps, youโre still likely to stick with one or two of your favorites. If you want to pick the right sportsbook, you should take the time to compare all the available brands and fully test their key characteristics, like design, features, payout speed, and more. At the very least, I like to try and capitalize on multiple welcome bonuses before I pick which sportsbooks will settle in as my regular preference.
User Experience
Get a feel for how the app performs on your mobile device. Is it easy to find your desired games and place bets? Do the pages load quickly? Does the app have any bugs and annoy you with unexpected logouts? It is important to get the answers to these questions and compare the apps, seeing which provides the best overall user experience.
Interface
An appโs interface should be easy on the eyes and give players quick access to all the important aspects of the sportsbook. It should feature good data density and show many games and markets on a single screen without requiring the user to scroll far or go to a different page.
However, the app must also hit that sweet spot, as displaying excessive information on a single page can make it look cluttered.
Features
Check out which app has features that most suit your betting style. Are you prone to having a change of heart? Consider an app with the best Early Cashout and bet editing features like BetMGM. Are same-game parlays (SGP) your forte? Check out FanDuel, as it arguably has the best SGP and SGP+ options in the business.
Bet types
If youโre mostly betting moneylines, spreads, and totals, you canโt go wrong with just about any app. However, suppose you like experimenting with different types of props and special live betting options. In that case, you should take some time to explore all the possibilities since different sportsbooks offer different market depths.
For instance, DraftKings is great for anyone who likes micro-betting. It features ultra-time-sensitive bets like predicting what happens in the next basketball play or the outcome of the next point in a tennis match.
Payout speed
All licensed betting apps will take a day or two to review your withdrawal requests before sending you the money (some quicker than others).

Responsible Vermont sports betting
Now that Gov. Scott has signed HB 127 into law, the Vermont (DLL) is responsible for overseeing all sports betting-related activity. As the regulatory body, the DLL reviews online sportsbook applications, issues licenses, performs audits, maintains security, enforces laws, and imposes fines. Additionally, it leads responsible gambling initiatives, such as providing resources for gambling addiction, offering prevention and treatment programs, and promoting communication about the importance of safe gaming.
To further mitigate the risks of problem gambling, the DLL works closely with online operators to allow individuals to add themselves to self-exclusion lists, set budgets, and put time limits on their sportsbook sessions.
Various resources for responsible gambling already exist on the Vermont government website:

Sportsbooks to avoid in Vermont
While legal Vermont sports betting is now a reality, there are only three sportsbooks available. Some bettors may want something a bit different and venture into the world of offshore sportsbooks.
However, these illegal sites are not regulated nor licensed, giving them leeway to engage in shady business practices, such as withholding winnings from players. Stick with the sites licensed and regulated by Vermont state officials.
Below are just a few examples of online sportsbooks you should avoid at all costs:
โ BetOnSports | โ TopBet | โ 131Sport |
---|---|---|
Blacklisted since 2006 | Over a dozen reported confiscated winnings | Blacklisted since 2007 |
Grand jury indictment | History of scams | |
Over $16-million owed | About $45,000 owed |
Growth of sports betting 📈
When the U.S. Supreme Court repealed PASPA in 2018, the growth of legal sports betting in the United States skyrocketed. Close to three dozen states have since legalized some form of sports betting, with the most common legislation including the licensing of online sportsbooks and mobile betting apps. Check our legal sports betting tracker to find out more about any state you're interested in.
Over the past few years, large states like Ohio and Massachusetts have enjoyed massively successful online betting launches. Sports fans get an extra way to engage with their favorite teams, and the states earn plenty of much-needed revenue from licensing fees and taxes.
More recently, legal North Carolina sports betting arrived on March 11, 2024, bringing eight of the best sportsbooks in the country to the Tar Heel state. And with events like the Copa America and Euro 2024 soccer tournaments happening all Summer long, the excitement and opportunities for sports betting enthusiasts continue to grow.
